ENDOCRINOLOGY
What is Endocrinology?
Endocrinology is the complex study of hormones in the body. There are numerous hormones produced by glands in the body, including the pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, ovary and testis. Hormones help regulate activities in the body, and have several effects on the metabolism, reproduction, food absorption and utilization, growth and development etc.
An endocrinologist is a specialist who deals with disorders that are caused as a result of abnormal glands, their hormonal functions and their related disorders. These encompass a wide range of problems including diabetes mellitus, overactive or underactive thyroid disorders, osteoporosis, cholesterol abnormalities, hypertension, and obesity.
When do I need to see an endocrinologist?
Not all hormonal problems require immediate treatment, while some conditions merely require watchful waiting. The decision on the next course of action often requires careful consideration of the clinical circumstances, and the degree of abnormality. Very often this has to be balanced with the patient’s wishes, concerns and symptoms.
At Glen Arden Endocrinology, we understand that each individual is unique, and there exists no one-size-fits-all solution. Each disorder can manifest itself in a variety of ways that can be both physically and emotionally distressing.
